The Challenge
OPI partnered with Solvative to modernize their grain monitoring workflow. On commercial farms, grain bins are massive structures often standing 60 to 120 feet tall and holding anywhere from 50,000 to over 1 million bushels of grain. Monitoring conditions inside these towering bins was traditionally done using a legacy handheld reader, which required operators to physically climb the bins and manually connect to sensors to collect data, an approach that was both time-consuming and physically demanding.
The stakes are high: the USDA estimates that 5-10% of stored grain is lost to spoilage annually, amounting to billions of dollars in global losses each year. Temperature fluctuations, moisture buildup, and restricted airflow inside bins can trigger mold growth or insect infestation issues that can spread rapidly if not detected in time.
Recognizing this, OPI aimed to transform the workflow for their customers by moving from a manual data collection system to a real-time digital experience. Solvative was brought in to develop a mobile application that connects seamlessly with the OPI BLUE Lite device via Bluetooth, enabling operators to access live grain condition data from ground level with ease and efficiency.
