Modernizing Mobile Banking for 500 Financial Institutions

Jack Henry & Associates

Jack Henry & Associates partnered with Solvative to replace 500 web-view-based goDough mobile banking apps with a single native iOS and Android platform, adding white-label theming, feature-flag configuration, and Mobile Remote Deposit Capture along the way.

Project Overview

When Apple tightened its App Store review standards around apps that were little more than wrapped websites, Jack Henry's entire goDough mobile banking footprint fell into that category at once. Solvative was brought in to rebuild the product natively, at the scale Jack Henry actually operated at: hundreds of separately branded client apps running on one shared platform.

SolvativeSolvative

Jack Henry & Associates (NASDAQ: JKHY) is a leading provider of technology solutions and payment processing services for financial institutions, marketed through its Jack Henry Banking, Symitar, and ProfitStars brands. goDough was its mobile banking product for banks and credit unions, reaching roughly 500 institutions at the time of this project and growing to about 610 institutions across 99 mobile carriers by 2013.

The Challenge

Under the goDough brand, Jack Henry didn't run one app; it ran roughly 500, one per bank and credit union client, each a separate App Store listing pointing at the same underlying web view. When Apple flagged that pattern for delisting, mobile banking access for all 500 of those financial institutions was at risk at the same time.

Because each app was its own branded, individually reviewed listing, the fix couldn't be "build one native app and swap it in." Solvative had to work directly with Apple to find a path that preserved what Jack Henry's clients actually needed, 500 individually branded, individually listed apps, while replacing the web-view core with something that would pass native review. That meant building one native codebase capable of producing 500 distinct, compliant apps rather than 500 separate engineering efforts.

The Solution

Solvative rebuilt the product from the UI up, engineering a single native platform that could stand in for every one of Jack Henry's 500 client apps without asking Jack Henry to maintain 500 codebases.

  • Native Mobile Application – Full native iOS and Android apps replaced the web-view core, with a UX redesigned around real mobile banking workflows instead of a repackaged website.

  • White-Label Theming – A theming layer let each financial institution apply its own branding, color palette, and logo to the same core build, so 500 banks and credit unions could each keep a distinct app identity on one platform.

  • Feature-Flag Architecture – A feature-flag system let Jack Henry turn individual banking features on or off per client without maintaining separate forks; a bank that didn't offer bill pay, for example, could ship a build without it, off the same base.

  • Mobile Remote Deposit Capture – Built end to end: a user photographs the front and back of a check, keys in the amount, and selects a deposit account, backed by Jack Henry's ProfitStars Remote Deposit module for approval. On the institution side, Solvative built deposit review and history, per-client configuration, FI-level reporting, and audit logging for every submission.

  • Security – Check images were encrypted in transit and never stored on the device; once a deposit was submitted, the app held nothing behind for someone to recover if the phone was lost or compromised. Access to the deposit feature was gated behind single sign-on authentication, and every deposit, viewed or submitted, was written to an audit trail.

  • Apple App Store Collaboration – Solvative worked directly with Apple to define a review path that would let Jack Henry keep 500 individually branded listings live under the new native architecture, rather than forcing a single consolidated listing that didn't match how Jack Henry's clients actually operated.

This project's success depended on close coordination with Jack Henry's own engineering and compliance teams, and with Apple's review process, since a misstep on either side risked pulling mobile banking access for hundreds of banks and credit unions at once rather than one app in isolation.

The Result

  • 500 Apps Kept Live – All 500 client apps stayed live and compliant on the App Store instead of facing delisting.

  • One Platform, Every Brand – A single native codebase replaced what had been hundreds of thin, divergent web-view builds, each still carrying its own institution's branding.

  • Faster Feature and Client Rollout – The theming and feature-flag foundation let Jack Henry launch new features or onboard new financial institutions without a fresh app submission for each one.

  • Deposit Capture at Scale – Mobile Remote Deposit Capture shipped across the same platform, backed by Jack Henry's ProfitStars Remote Deposit Anywhere solution and processed through the ACH and Check 21 image exchange networks.

  • Continued Growth – goDough grew from roughly 500 institutions during this project to about 610 banks and credit unions on 99 mobile carriers by the time the finished deposit capture feature launched in February 2013.

Outcomes

500 Apps, Zero Delistings

Rebuilt the entire goDough platform natively before Apple's review changes could pull mobile banking access for 500 banks and credit unions at once.

One Codebase Behind Every Brand

Replaced hundreds of separately maintained web-view builds with a single native app, themeable and feature-flagged per institution.

Impact

Solvative's rebuild gave Jack Henry a mobile banking platform that could scale by configuration instead of by codebase, letting goDough keep growing (to roughly 610 institutions by 2013) without repeating the App Store risk that started the project. Jack Henry's president, Tony Wormington, said of the finished platform: "Mobile banking is a strategic service that financial institutions must offer to attract and retain tech-savvy consumers in today's highly competitive financial services industry."
